What Do Doctors Think About Before Cervical Spine Surgery? Watch Video Now
With Thanksgiving upon us, this seems a good time to share the story of our most recent trip to the Dominican Republic.
In October, 2014 Dr. Shah and Princeton Brain and Spine Care team flew down to the Dominican Trip for a second mission trip. Dr. Shah visited the Bonao School in the Dominican Republic. At this time, he had the opportunity to evaluate 38 patients and performed scoliosis screening. These patients included students from the school as well as field workers from the tobacco fields.
Other members of the medical team Dan Suarez, president of Optec Inc., which is a brace manufacturing company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Also we had the pleasure of working with Ellin Perez, who is a certified orthodontic and prosthetics technician. Approximately half of the patients evaluated by Dr. Shah were fitted for and provided back braces to address his/her scoliosis.
In addition, Dr. Shah and the medical team met with local providers of physical therapy and MRI diagnostic imaging that will be used in the future to provide services to the patients seen at the Bonao School by Dr. Shah. The costs of the physical therapy and the MRI diagnostic imaging will be paid by the Shah Medical Foundation through donations received.
To date, Dr. Shah has seen over 100 patients and will continue to visit the school to see future patients every six months. On our next visit, Dr.Shah will meet with a local free-standing surgery center and will make arrangements for interventional pain management care. Finally, in order to complete the continuum of care for these patients Leo D’Orazio met with the administrator of a public hospital in San Pedro, Domincian Republic. It is anticipated by 2016, Dr. Shah will complete the continuum of care for the scoliosis patients by performing surgery at this hospital.
Dr. Shah continues to monitor 14 year old Janella’s care who was one of the first patient’s Dr. Shah saw and the medical mission provided a custom made brace for severe scoliosis and continues to make progress towards a normal and healthy adult life.
