What is Chiari Malformation?

McLaughlin Scrubs SmallMark R. McLaughlin, MD, FACS, FAANS

In this video, Princeton neurosurgeon Dr. McLaughlin explains the whats and whys of Chiari Malformation. Learn more about this often misunderstood and misdiagnosed  condition.

What is a Chiari Malformation?

Chiari malformation is usually a congenital brain malformation which is characterized by impaired CSF circulation through the foramen magnum. The coordination center of the brain- called the cerebellum sinks below the opening of the skull- disrupting the normal fluid pathways leading to a buildup of Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF), resulting in headaches. This fluid buildup can also occur in the spinal cord and is then known as syringomyelia.
